1 out of 5 stars SAMSUNG IS A DISASTER!   September 5, 2010
Michelle Michaud
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

Thought I was gonna love this tv, and did for 3 mos, now I am just so sorry I ever believed samsung was the way to go. I Purchased the Samsung 50" Plasma TV from Amazon on 4/3/2010, delivery date of 4/7/2010. Sale price total $674.00 paid, now selling on amazon for $749. Problem occurred on 7/23/2010. Sitting watching tv, screen went black, audio still working. Turned off & on again, then heard a fizzle/pop, and a burning smell. Upon closer inspection, could see inside panel had popped a starburst on interior only. Immediately called samsung to report need for repair or replacement under 1yr manufacturer's warranty. Was told they would be sending a certified samsung tech from Roche Service Co from Wethersfield, CT and they should call in next 48 hours, gave wnty reg# 4006981401. On Monday I called them myself and scheduled the neded appt. Roche sent the 1st tech on 7/27/2010. He removed the tv from the wall, opened it, and confirmed the mounting brackets had nothing to do with it, no exterior damage whatsoever, and it obviously had some kind of interior malfunction. Roche reported this to samsung. On 7/30/2010 Roche informed me the company would not approve a new panel/or tv until seeing photographs and I needed to take the pictures and email them in. Then roche would in turn submit them to samsung. On 7/6/2010, I'd had no results, then was told I was being denied because the pictures show physicl damage to the front of the screen, meaning the starburst. They stated the starburst looked like it had a white impact mark in the middle of it. I pointed out that there was no exterior damage at all, the certified tech from roche confirmed that already and of course you were going to see the starburst in the pictures through the clear screen...it was still interior. I was told they understood my frustration but the samsung claim techs could only authorize a replacement based on photographs and nothing else but he would escalate my claim to the executive claim dept. On 8/10/2010 I checked in with Roche and was told by an owner that samsung was asking for better photographs showing I had not caused exterior damage to my tv, I was so upset. He decided to come take pictures the night of 8/10/2010 himself. He took 27 pictures, my husband was here. Roche sent them in to samsung. On 8/16/2010 I contacted Samsung again and was told i had once again been denied a repair or replacement under warranty because they had determined by the photos that there was a physical exterior damage (the starburst)to my tv. I AGAIN explained that that is not the real situation, the damage is interior and simply visible thru the screen in photos. She verified this information had been stated before, she also verified TWO certified samsung techs from Roche had been to my house on the two seperate occasions and both confirmed the same information...so the last thing she could try for me was to escalate my claim to corporate and ask them to make an exception to the photos because it in fact was interior damage, not related to anyone creating damage. She asked me to please hold off on doing any further action on this until she tried to get suthorization from them, stating she would get back to me by Wed or Thursday (8/19/2010) the latest. I called on 8/19, 8/20, still no answer. Called back on Monday 8/23/2010 only to be told again that I was being denied due to exterior damage and that my warranty was now null and void based on those photos. I explained yet again that this made no sense, there was no exterior damage, no foul play, it had been confirmed by the techsand I told them I would contact BBB, CR, the news stations, a lawyer and write the necessary reviews of their co...but was told they would do nothing else for me, a report would be written up stating there was exterior damage seen by way of photos, and that I could go ahead and do what I had to do but they would not be assisting me any further. So now I have no tv, I'm out $674, any respect I had for samsung, warranties, & new technology. Now I have filed with BBB, and will write reviews, contact the news, and a lawyer next...what a mess. Good luck to all the fellow owners of Samsung products.

1 out of 5 stars Great HDTV-Lousy Amazon-CEVA shipping/delivery in St.Louis MO   August 9, 2010
RNEREEE
I originally purchased this HDTV from Amazon, but it took the shipping agent in St.Louis (CEVA and TopHat) forever to schedule a delivery (1+ week late). I canceled the HDTV before it arrived at my home. I purchased the TV from American TV in St.Louis. Great store- Same great bargain price- Great TV. Avoid ordering large items from Amazon that require CEVA or TopHat to deliver your order. CEVA is understaffed and incompetent.

4 out of 5 stars Great value but ..   July 12, 2010
ff
I'm comparing this TV with an 2005/2006 Panasonic 50" TH-50PX60U 720p Plasma that I also have in another room. The Panasonic was considered the second best available vs. the pricey Pioneer standard available at the time. The newer model Panasonic plasmas are the primary competition for this TV.

Despite my happiness with the Panasonic, I purchased the Samsung because of reports of declining black levels after moderate usage on the 2009 Panasonics, and no similar report on Samsung. Despite being an early adopter of the flat panels, I was not ready to spend 2-4x as much on a 3D Plasma or LCS TV and am waiting for the price to drop and available 3D material to increase and hoping for removal of the expensive glasses requirement in a family of five, before making a 3D choice.

I am using this TV with very high quality Verizon FIOS (fibre optic) HD and SD sources.

Plus:
- Great value, especially compared to comparable LCD's of similar picture quality or more expensive plasmas with features you may not need; remember you can get all the internet features much more inexpensively through a blue-ray player or home theater in a box if you are adding a sound system than through a TV.
- Great picture, but see below for small qualification
- Very thin for a low priced TV - thinner than almost any other LCD or plasma except the higher end Samsung models.
- Power requirement is much lower than older plasmas and lower than prior years (at least the spec, I didn't measure!)
- Volume is much louder than expected - I never use more than 15% of full volume in a large (22x15, cathedral ceiling, 4000 cu feet) room with lots of fabric.
- "Grey" touch of color barely noticeable (looks like piano-black high gloss) for those who don't like the previous year's red touch of color design
- Controls (not visible in photos) are in front, not side, and operate with light touch.
- Amazon shipping was faster than expected and courteous inside, 2nd floor delivery at no extra charge.

Minus
- Connectors are perpendicular (not parallel) to TV, so you have to use a regular (not slim) mount or up to $100+ worth of right angle connectors for all connections. this somewhat defeats the purpose of a slim TV.
- Like Panasonic, source (input) selection "rotates" and cannot be selected individually, which makes it impossible to use macros e.g. on universal remotes to select the input, power up the source in one command.

In between
- Picture out of the box is excellent, on HD and SD, though not quite as sharp on HD as 5 year old Panasonic, even though black levels are better on the Samsung.
I do not have the equipment to adjust the picture to see if it will come up to the level of Panasonic, and have not spent the $ on a professional though the Samsung has more picture adjustments than the Panasonic.
- Connectors are limited, e.g. two HDMI, two component, no VGA (though some newer laptops like Macbook Pro have HDMI output, but not sound over HDMI). However, in most cases this shouldn't be an issue, and you can use it with a receiver with more HDMI ports and switching if required. I connected FIOS (Cable box), computer (and future blue-ray or similar), DVD/VCR combo and DVD recorder.

PS Like most professional reviews, I could not tell the difference (besides price!) between 720p and 1080i or P in side by side comparisons on a 50" TV with 1080p sources, at any normal viewing distance. However, see a slight difference in 55" TV and it becomes more obvious in 60" but is more apparent in 10' projectors. I can also see the difference between the higher priced models, but only in side by side comparisons, they are pretty subtle in most material. From what I saw, you have to pay 3x more for LCD for the same quality picture as this plasma in 50" category. Yes you get more features, lower power consumption (though not nearly justifying the price difference, even with expected power increases) and perhaps even a thinner TV, but its your money!

1 out of 5 stars Wrong TV Base...Nobody helping   July 6, 2010
Joe
Hello,
I received my tv on time however the television arrived with the wrong base. The base was in good condition however it just did not fit the tv. I thought perhaps I was doing it wrong so I reviewed the instructions as well as looped in friends to assist and it was still wrong. If someone from amazon could reach out to me and assist me that would make my day. (508) 612-2138

5 out of 5 stars Shopped for months and returned to Amazon   June 30, 2010
Susan Cook (Falls Church, VA)
I shopped for months and returned to Amazon to finally buy this product for $661 no tax and free shipping. This was my first big screen TV and I can say it is well worth the price.
